Drug & alcohol treatment programs: How and where to start your search

n your search for the right drug & alcohol rehab program, perhaps the most important step is to assess the psychological and emotional characteristics of the drug addict wanting to or required to enter a treatment program. A key in addiction treatment success is in matching the person with the program and treatment style.

For instance, a very independent and "strong-headed" individual probably will have a harder time accepting the approach of a program that utilizes confrontational techniques in their drug addiction treatment just as a generally lazy and unmotivated addict may not step up to the plate and get the full value out of a less-aggresive rehab methodology.

Ask yourself some questions and be thoroughly honest with the answers:

1. Is the addict a leader or a follower?
   
2. How does the addict tend to learn best? By listening, by reading, or by active involvement?
   
3. Would you classify the addict as a "strong-willed" or "weak-willed" individual?
   
4. In what types of classes in school did the addict receive the best grades?
   
5. What types of activities does he or she enjoy?
   
6. What types of local drug treatment support programs are available in the addict's community?
   
7. How does the individual plan to pay for the program? Insurance?
   
8. Are family and/or friends willing to participate in some aspects of the treatment program?

The objective of this exercise is to find the right drug treatment program and have the best chance at success. Armed with the answers to these questions, you'll better be able to evaluate the various programs available.
